Making Butter

This week I made butter with the children, they were all fascinated by the process. I remember doing it with heavy cream from the store when my older ones were little but never have I done it from raw milk.

I used 3 cups of raw cream the cream will go through the following stages: Sloshy, frothy, soft whipped cream, firm whipped cream, coarse whipped cream. Then, suddenly, the cream will seize, its smooth shape will collapse, and the whirring will change to sloshing. The butter is now fine grained bits of butter in buttermilk, and a few seconds later, a glob of yellowish butter will separate from milky buttermilk. It took my kitchen aid about 5 mins.

Drain the buttermilk. Keep for other uses as it is perfectly good raw buttermilk but I did just learn it is called whey.

3. Add 1/2 cup of cold water, and blend further. Discard wash water and repeat until the wash water is clear (it took me 2 times).
4. Add 1/2 tsp of salt, to taste, if desired.

We Are the Models

We reproduce what we are in our kids. What we live, not what we believe, will come to live in them. Moses is an illustration of this principle:

  • Just like his mom and dad, Moses lived by faith instead of by his five senses.
  • Just like his mom and dad, Moses chose to please God by traveling upstream against the current, even to the point of disobeying the powers that be.
  • Just like his mom and dad, he did not fear what the state would do to him; he feared God first.
Moses knew no lifestyle other than his upbringing of faith. His parents were unwilling to settle for the kings decree, the status quo, if you will. They modeled a life style of living for a greater King, in a greater kingdom.  What will be said of you? What are you choosing to be as a mom and as a dad?

Best Friends

Real “life training” begins at home when your sister won’t share her toys or when your little brother scribbles all over your new coloring book. It continues as you grow up and learn how to respond to daily trials and conflicts—big or small—that you experience at home. If you can’t succeed at home in the “small conflicts,” how will you be able to deal with bigger conflicts later in life?

Our brothers and sisters are one of the biggest blessings that God has given us! But sadly, many siblings fight, argue, and miss out on the close relationship that God intends. The problem is not just the surface battles, but the underlying attitudes, wrong concepts, and offenses. Many broken relationships never get fixed. Few enjoy the special, lifelong treasure that God intended. God desires that we not merely “get along” with our brothers and sisters, but that we become best friends!

Is this possible? Absolutely! God's Word has the answers for every situation, and the Lord gives grace to those who ask for it.

Rachael and Jude are my cloest spaced babies at 18 months apart. These two are best little friends, you can always find these two together.
I read this little book a few years back,  it confirmed many of the things the Lord has already put in my heart for my family with some practical how-to's.
